Pictures from the scene appear to show a building on fire. Some eyewitnesses have claimed a missile was fired into it at around 8.45pm London time. Loud explosions have been heard near a shopping mall in the city. One person claimed: “Urgent! Explosion in Abu Dhabi. Suspect that a missile would have hit the city.” Other footage shows emergency services rushing to the scene, with reports of a second explosion.
Abu Dhabi is scheduled to host UEFA’s Club World Cup tournament this week.
Social media reports have suggested one of the the explosions happened 20km from the hotel of the Brazillian football team Palmerias.
Several police cars can be seen parked along a central road.
Pedestrians are also seen stood still and watching something in the distance.
It currently remains unclear the reason behind the two explosions.
Injuries to civilians are also unknown.
