The boy, known locally as Haidar, is believed to be wedged inside the well and rescuers were seen digging down in an attempt to save him in the Shoko village in south Afghanistan. Footage shared on social media showed the boy wedged in the well, able to move his arms and upper body.
In the footage, the little boy can be heard crying for help.
His father can be heard saying: “Are you okay my son?
“Talk with me and don’t cry.
“We are working to get you out.”
To which the terrified boy replied: “Okay, I will keep talking.”
Local officials believe the boy is trapped around 33ft down the 82ft shaft.
Abdullah Azzam, secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Abdulghani Barada, tweeted: “A team is there with an ambulance, oxygen and other necessary things.”
This comes just weeks after a five-year-old boy died after spending four days trapped down a well in Morocco.

News of his death came shortly after rescuers reached the boy’s body.
They worked through the night to dig an access tunnel less than 3ft from the boy.
There had been hopes that he would have survived after footage recorded from a camera showed that the boy was alive and conscious.
This was despite him appearing to be suffering from some minor head injuries.
Rescue workers have lowered an oxygen mask, food and water into the well but it was unclear whether the boy had been able to use the supplies.
Fears of a possible landslide have complicated the task.
Speaking before the grim discovery, chief rescuer Abdelhadi Tamrani told AFP that the camera showed him from behind lying on his side.
“It is not possible to determine the child’s condition at all at this time. But we hope to God that the child is alive,” he told local TV.
As the tragic news emerged, many social media users paid tribute to the youngster and his family.
Mahmoud Rabie wrote: “Sleep in peace little angel.
“You brought the world together but shattered our hearts.
“Rest In Peace Rayan. We are burning inside!”
