Brussels fears total chaos as ‘European freedom convoy’ prepares to descend on EU HQ

Brussels is on alert as the so-called European freedom convoy moves towards the Belgian capital – with the European Union headquarters in its sights  It is thought the protesters will try to blockade roads around the Belgian capital tomorrow before occupying streets close to the EU headquarters. Tonight, Brussels Airport tweeted out a notice to travellers to avoid roads and “use the train where possible” ahead of the convoy protest.

Demonstrators from across Europe are expected to join up in Brussels on Monday after separate protests took place across Europe this weekend.

According to Politico, many of the protesters have already gathered on Sunday near the Belgian border.

A Facebook group associated with French protesters posted on Sunday: “They wanted to bury us, they didn’t know we were seeds. Next step — Brussels.”

The protest is expected to gather near Parc du Cinquantenaire to the west of the city’s EU quarter.

The convoy of trucks, cars and campervans are protesting against a wide range of grievances, including COVID vaccine passes and restrictions.

Local officials in Brussels have urged people to stay away, as authorities have already banned Monday’s demonstration.

Law enforcement has even prohibited some vehicles from entering the city until Tuesday.

Police in the Belgian capital are preparing in case the protest turns violent while the Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden said: “We’re doing everything we can to avoid Brussels from getting blocked.”

A similar protest also broke out in The Hague, in the Netherlands, with people blocking the entrance to the country’s parliament.

The European freedom convoy is inspired by the ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests that erupted across Canada in late January.
