BBC QT: ‘Nothing is free!’ Audience member blasts SNP minister during furious tirade

The programme, which was filmed in St Andrews this week, saw Scottish SNP minister Màiri McAllan flounder as a ranting audience member unleashed a furious tirade over initiatives taken by Scottish MSPs to support their constituencies. Speaking about the poor state of health and infrastructure, the man called the situation “scandalous”.

He said: “What is it that Scottish MSPs are actually doing because everything is the fault of Westminster?

“We have had devolution that was going to be this wonderful in Scotland and elsewhere, and we are no further forward.

“We don’t have any improvements, and there just seems to be millions and billions of pounds that get wasted and there is no improvement in poverty.

“We have food banks, this is ridiculous in the 21st century in Scotland. Absolutely scandalous. Why is it that they cannot come up with solutions?”

As he continued blaming the authorities, the show host, Fiona Bruce asked him whether he was blaming the Government of Westminster or the Government at Holyrood?

To which he replied: “Well, it is a bit of both. But in reality, why is it that we have a devolved Government that has got all of this money, given from the UK government, and they cannot seem to solve any of these problems?

“Suicide, drugs, addictions, you know, the health, the roads, the transport, everything, what is it?

“You just need to go out on roads around here and you could play 18 holes going down the street at Aviemore. We don’t have to go onto the golf course for that.

Trying to answer his questions, SNP Minister Màiri McAllan gave examples of the free services that Scots are being offered by the government.

She tried to explain to the man by giving an example of free education and the newly introduced free transport service for those under 22 years of age.

However, she was immediately interrupted by the audience member who said that the services are not free.

He interrupted: “It’s not free, we have paid for it.

“Nothing is free. We have to pay for it.”
