Trudeau flees Canada capital as 50k furious anti-vaccine mandate HGV protests spark chaos

Mr and his family have left their Ottawa home amid security concerns as demonstrators marched up and down the streets of the capital. The protestors gathered outside the front of the Prime Minister’s office to rally against the vaccine mandate. The protest originated last week in western Canada.

It began with only dozens of truckers who began a convoy to drive from Vancouver to Ottawa to demonstrate against a vaccination requirement for Canadian truck drivers.

The Canadian prime minister has dismissed the protestors as a “small minority”.

The protest escalated when hundreds of truckers drove their giant rigs into the Canadian capital Ottawa on Saturday.

The title of the demonstration is ‘Freedom Convoy’ which started as a protest against vaccine mandates required to cross the US border.

The movement received an endorsement on Thursday from Tesla boss Elon Musk.

Mr Musk tweeted: “Canadian truckers rule.”

The trucker movement has become a rallying point for many on the right of politics in Canada and the US.

Canadian media said the prime minister and his family had been escorted out of their home and taken to a secret location in Ottawa.

He added: “The vaccination requirements are taking us toward a new society we never voted for.”

An unvaccinated 28-year-old trucker from Ontario called Stephen Penderness said he was protesting for all Canadians.

He said: “It’s actually for every single person.

“It’s for everybody on the road.

“It’s all about your free choice.”
