With reference to recent remarks made by Ms Dorries, she commented: “BBC News has to be independent, impartial, free from this political pressure – whatever is going on corporately for the BBC at the time, and we have always been brilliant at this.
“We even report on ourselves even when it’s very uncomfortable and we’ve done it over many, many years.
“Because BBC News’s independence in this area is incredibly precious.”
In response, Ms Ryan said: “Thanks to the licence fee, the BBC has a monopoly over the British media news cycle and therefore an unfair influence over the ‘public square’.
