Putin’s safe port for Submarines exposed – nuclear weapons warning as tensions boil

Cuban journalist Alberto Méndez Castelló said it is “possible” that the Kremlin will use the country as “a safe haven for Russian submarines”. He stressed, however, this was “not very visible” at the time being.

Mr Castelló pointed to the recent unveiling of two Russian nuclear-powered submarines – named Knyaz Oleg and Novosibirsk.

The latter of these, he suggested, was the “most expensive and advanced submarine in Russian naval history”.

It is reported to have 24 missiles that can be either anti-ship, nuclear warhead-carrying or land-attack missiles.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov last week refused to rule out the possibility of the Kremlin deploying military infrastructure close to America’s shores.

He said he could not “exclude” the notion such a move could take place involving Venezuela or Cuba.

Mr Lavrov told RTVI: “I don’t want to confirm anything or exclude anything.

“It depends on the steps of our American counterparts.”

Following diplomatic talks in Geneva, he added: “We did not touch upon this issue today.”

Russia has, however, doubled down on its opposition to NATO expansionism.

US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman’s response was firm: “We will not allow anyone to slam closed NATO’s open-door policy.”

Private intelligence firm Dragonfly believes Russia could deliver a “devastating” attack “at little to no notice” if it so decided.

The firm added that efforts to deter the Kremlin from such actions “appear to have failed”.

It stressed that the threat of sanctions “have had little impact” with Russia having “sanction-proofed” its economy.
