Motorway horror crash shuts down M80 both ways as emergency services rush to scene

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 1.35pm on Saturday. The motorway was closed in both directions following the accident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.35pm on Saturday, February 5, officers were called to the M80 near junction 7, following a report of a one-vehicle crash.

“Emergency services remain at the scene.”

In a tweet at 3.30pm, Road Policing Scotland warned the motorway would remain closed for several hours.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the route if possible.

Road Policing Scotland said: “#M80 N/B from Jct 5 ( Cumbernauld )and S/B from Jct 7 ( Haggs ) is currently closed due to a serious RTC.

“It will remain closed for a number of hours to allow investigation work to be completed. Avoid if possible.”

One eyewitness said: “Bad accident. Very long queues in both directions.”

Another told the Daily Record “trauma teams” were at the scene.

The Traffic Scotland Twitter account warned at 2.30pm traffic was “very heavy” in the area.

Pictures show two fire engines, ambulances and police at the scene as traffic tails back down the motorway.

In a tweet at 2.45pm, Stagecoach East Scotland said services from Glasgow to Fife would be delayed due to the incident.

The coach company said: “Due to traffic on the M80 at junction 7 all services from Glasgow to Fife will be delayed apologies for the inconvenience.”

It is unclear if there have been any injuries in the accident.
