Medical emergency in the crowd at Tottenham v Chelsea game causes lengthy delay

A medical emergency in the crowd led to there being eight minutes of added time at the end of the second half as Tottenham faced Chelsea in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The incident occurred in the 87th minute of the game at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, with a home supporter requiring treatment. Following a delay of around five minutes, during which the players remained on the pitch, referee Andre Marriner resumed the game.

BBC Radio Five Live reported that the fan was eventually able to walk away from the seats with the support of medics.

A tweet from Tottenham’s official Twitter account read: ‘Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to the supporter who was taken ill.’

Chelsea tweeted: ‘Everyone at Chelsea wishes the home supporter well.’

Chelsea progressed to the final after winning 1-0 on the night (courtesy of an Antonio Rudiger goal) and 3-0 on aggregate.

On December 1, the Watford versus Chelsea and Southampton versus Leicester games were both paused so that a fan could receive treatment in the stands.

In October a fan was given emergency treatment during Newcastle’s game against Tottenham at St James’ Park, with the supporter being stabilised and taken to hospital. The game was restarted after a 20 minute delay.
