Psychologist Elizabeth Loftus told the court in New York: “People are a little more accurate when they’re confident than when they’re not confident.”
The expert witness added people can get “very confident about wrong answers” in cases of post-event suggestion.
And she told jurors: “One thing we know about memory is that it doesn’t work like a recording device.”
Maxwell, 59, is accused of procuring, grooming and at times sexually abusing four girls under 18 for late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
She has pleaded not guilty to each.
Her first defence witness was Epstein’s former secretary Cimberly Espinoza, who said she never saw Maxwell engage inappropriately with underage girls.
