Matthew Willson, 31, was killed by a stray bullet which had been shot from a neighbouring apartment complex in Atlanta. The bullet travelled 800ft and penetrated a wall before hitting Mr Wilson in the head. Mr Wilson had been with his girlfriend Kate Shepard, whom he travelled to see from west London.
Police were called by Ms Shepard who was giving aid to her boyfriend.
Mr Wilson was taken to a local hospital in the early hours last Sunday but could not be saved.
Police said they were called at 2am on Sunday.
As they attended the initial call, they then received a separate report of another incident from another block of flats where Mr Wilson was staying.
Mr Wilson studied at Georgia State University.
He also studied at Exeter University and had been living in the UK.
A Brookhaven Police Department spokesman said: “This incident appears to be a random act involving individuals participating in the reckless discharge of firearm(s) which led to the tragic death of Dr Willson.
“Dr Willson was in town from England visiting loved ones when the incident occurred.”
Detectives have not made any arrests in relation to the incident.
They also believe the gun was fired recklessly.
