

The tragic incident occurred at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. A further 17 people were left injured following the stampede at the hilltop shrine in the Jammu and Kashmir region. The incident took place at 2.40am as many gathered at the famous shrine to celebrate the New Year.
Reports revealed some of those who had been rushed to hospital had suffered serious injuries.
It is thought an argument broke out and as crowds got out of control.
Victims were transferred to Naraina Hospital, Gopal Dutt, block medical officer of Community Health Centre said.
Dilbag Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police, said there had been a minor altercation between a group of young men.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said he was saddened by the tragic incident.
He also passed on his condolences to the families of the victims.
He said: “Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan.
“Condolences to the bereaved families.

Dr JP Singh, Neurosurgeon at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, said four of the 15 admitted to hospital remain in a serious condition.
A further five are still receiving treatment.
