MEPs suggested they could have secured the vote for Remain if they campaigned and warned “often misled” British voters of the risks of leaving, a report on the Article 50 process said. It stated: “British citizens had scant knowledge about the European Union and were not adequately informed about the far-reaching consequences of the decision to leave the union.”
The report went on to say: “Citizens were never given a clear picture of the relationship that their country would have with the EU once it left, and were often misled about the implications of the withdrawal, especially as regards Northern Ireland.”
However, the report sparked outrage among Express.co.uk readers.
figaro99 seethed: “The EU are just a laughing stock on the world stage.”
To which Cortina replied: “Couldn’t agree more. The EU is, was and always will be, anti-British.”
Fellow reader StepneyExile chimed in: “I think it is the EU that just doesn’t get it. We just did not want to be told what we must do by unelected bureaucrats. We were not lied to, they were lying to themselves, thinking that we would always believe the ‘trustworthy’ EU.
“Well, the chickens are coming home to roost and they ain’t landing here, that’s for sure! Hungary, Poland who else is thinking for themselves?”
DannyHakim fumed: “I think that people knew exactly what they were voting for, although we have not seen or had the Brexit voted for up to now just BINO [Brexit in name only].”
Polly Ticks raged: “It wasn’t just about respect. They simply didn’t listen. All the warning signs were there, but they took no notice. The result was that Britain left and now they are blaming us for all their shortcomings.”

Meanwhile, the leader of the DUP Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said on Thursday that unionism is rapidly losing faith that a negotiated solution to issues with the Northern Ireland Protocol can be achieved through the ongoing negotiations between the EU and UK.
The DUP leader, who has repeatedly called on the UK Government to suspend the controversial trading arrangements by triggering the Article 16 mechanism, was speaking after a virtual meeting with European Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic.
Mr Sefcovic has been holding talks with the main Stormont leaders ahead of next week’s meeting of the EU/UK joint committee on implementing the Protocol.
Sir Jeffrey, who last year stopped his ministers participating in cross border political meetings as part of his campaign against the Protocol, said it is the “greatest threat to progress and prosperity in Northern Ireland of our generation”.
He added: “The EU can no longer keep up the pretence that the Protocol was about protecting peace.
“The Irish Sea border does not have the support of a single unionist elected representative. It is divisive and undemocratic.
“It trashes the cross-community consent principle. The absence of a functioning Executive or North-South structures demonstrates that the protocol is an unrivalled danger to fairness and progress in Northern Ireland.
“Unionism is rapidly losing faith that a negotiated solution is possible.”
He added that it is time for the Government to restore fairness and reinstate Northern Ireland’s access to the UK internal market.
Sir Jeffrey said: “This is the only way to build a better future for everyone in Northern Ireland.”
