‘Needs to be corrected’ Germany’s Nord Stream 2 ‘mistake’ savaged as Ukraine MP hits out

Germany has been facing accusations of having been too soft with Russia because of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline agreement Berlin struck with Moscow. Ukraine has been especially critical due to mounting fears of a potential invasion as Vladimir Putin deployed what are believed to be nearly 100,000 troops to the border over the past three months. Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko insisted Berlin’s decision to enter an agreement with Russia “must be corrected” as she hit out at European partners failing to show her country proper support against Moscow’s hostility.

Speaking to LBC, Ms Vasylenko said: “Essentially, we’re in Cold War 2 at the moment, the world is.

“We have to face that fact – the sooner we realise that, the sooner we can act accordingly.

“If we’re being honest, then the Germans can start taking action because it’s not enough anymore to just acknowledge that Nord Stream was a mistake.

“That mistake needs to be corrected.”

She continued: “And the same goes with the Americans.

“We are greatly appreciative as a people of all the help we’re getting because, quite honestly, it’s the UK and the US who are the only allied countries that have been consistently providing Ukraine with support and military aide and diplomatic support.”

Germany has delayed approval of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline until at least the second half of 2022, but not cancelled the nearly-completed project.

Joe Biden said on Monday the pipeline would be halted if Russia invades Ukraine.

“Every diplomatic effort must be made to de-escalate this situation.

“I say that knowing that every sanction of course has costs in one’s own economy.”

Moscow has repeatedly disputed Washington’s version of events, saying it has massed more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border to maintain its own security against aggression by NATO allies.

Russia, which has accused Western nations of spreading lies, meanwhile said on Saturday it had decided to “optimise” its diplomatic staff numbers in Ukraine, fearing “provocations” by Kiev or another party.
