F1 closing in on deal to return to Las Vegas after success of recent season and Netflix series

Formula One chiefs are in the closing stages of a deal which would see the sport make a long-awaited return to Las Vegas.

The Sun claim the proposed street circuit along the famous strip could see the race introduced as early as 2023.

It would mean there would be a third race in the United States after Austin and Miami, which will be making its debut this year.

F1 has previously hosted two races in Las Vegas in 1981 and 1982 at Caesars Palace but the small crowds didn’t justify a return.

American owners Liberty Media have been focused on their home market since buying the sport for £6billion in 2017.

The sport’s popularity has grown massively over the past few years, thanks in part to the huge success of the Netflix documentary Drive to Survive.

The show, which will enter its fourth series later this year, has managed to attract many new fans through its behind-the-scenes look at top level motor racing.

This was followed by what many believe to be the most exciting F1 season of all time as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton took it right down to the wire.

A back and forth campaign, laden with controversy reached its climax with the fierce rivals entering the final race on exactly the same points.

Verstappen ultimately passed Hamilton on the final lap in more controversial circumstances to win his first world title.
